Good to know
Do my files really stay on my computer?
Yes. The converters are part of the page and run inside your browser. There is no upload step and no server that receives your files. If you open your browser's developer tools and watch the Network tab while converting, you'll see your files are never sent anywhere. The one exception is reading text from images (OCR): it needs a large recognition engine, so we ask before downloading it, and even then your image stays on your device.
Why does my PDF look different as a DOCX?
PDFs store where each letter sits on the page, not paragraphs and styles. We pull the text out and rebuild it as paragraphs, so the words come through but complex layouts, columns and pictures don't. Scanned PDFs have no text at all. For those, convert the PDF to PNG first, then the PNG to TXT.
Why is video so slow?
To make an MP4 or WebM, your browser plays the video and records it as it goes, so a 3-minute clip takes about 3 minutes. GIFs, thumbnails and audio extraction are much quicker.
Is there a file size limit?
There's no fixed limit, but everything happens in your device's memory. Very large files of several GB may fail on phones or older computers.
How is convert-box free?
It's paid for by ads, but only if you allow them. Ads never see your files, because your files never leave your device. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
Which formats don't work?
Older Microsoft Office files (.doc, .ppt), AVI and WMV videos, and RAR or 7z archives aren't supported yet. Animated GIFs and multi-page TIFFs only keep their first frame when converted to other image formats.
